Britain's Andy Murray proved too strong for American Mardy Fish in the searing Cincinnati heat as he reached the final of the Masters 1000 event.

The Scot edged the first set and battled his way through a second set of six breaks to win 6-3 7-6 (10-8).

Murray will face world number one Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final.

The women's final will be between world number seven Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic, the world number 14 from Serbia.

Sharapova came from a set down to beat second seed Vera Zvonareva 2-6 6-3 6-3. The Russian is chasing her second title of the year, after winning in Rome in May.

Jankovic hasn't won a WTA Tour title since March 2010, and faced few problems in beating Andrea Petkovic of Germany 7-6 (7-4) 6-1.

Djokovic progressed, and improved his record for the year to 57 wins and one loss, after Tomas Berdych retired with a shoulder injury in their semi-final having dropped the first set.

Murray, 24, showed signs in the opening set of getting back to somewhere near his best as he became the first man this week to break the Fish serve in moving 3-1 clear, converting his fifth break point of the game

"I was struggling physically in the second set - it was hot but that's not an excuse," said Murray.

"My legs were feeling tired. It was the conditions. I need to get stronger. This is the first tough match I've played for five or six weeks. I need to get some more endurance in me before the US Open."

The final Grand Slam tournament of the year begins in New York on 29 August.

 Arsenal - featuring Samir Nasri in the line-up with his proposed move to Manchester City on hold - held their own until impressive youngster Emmanuel Frimpong was sent off with 20 minutes left.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish reacted by introducing Luis Suarez and Raul Meireles in what proved to be the decisive move, as the pair were involved in both goals.

They combined before youngster Ignasi Miquel, on for early injury victim Laurent Koscielny, saw a clearance deflect off Aaron Ramsey into his own net after 78 minutes and Suarez applied a simple finish from Meireles's pass in the dying seconds to wrap up Liverpool's first win of the season.

Arsenal applied plenty of effort but look desperately thin on rescources, something Wenger must address urgently, whereas Dalglish was able to bide his time before bringing on Suarez to make an emphatic impact.

Dalglish was ecstatic at the final whistle, whereas Wenger must now fear his defensive options will be reduced further by Koscielny's back problem ahead of Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against Udinese in Italy.

Nasri received a mixed reception when his name was announced - but swiftly won over his detractors with an energetic and influential performance in the opening period, with youngster Frimpong also impressive.

Arsenal also had to regroup after the early loss of Koscielny with a back spasm. Young Spanish defender Miquel came on and Liverpool almost took advantage of the defensive readjustment as Andy Carroll rose to meet Stewart Downing's cross and produce an athletic save from Wojciech Szczesny.

Szczesny had an easier task to save from Jordan Henderson's header before Arsenal grew in confidence and started to threaten in the latter stages of the half.

Nasri demonstrated the verve that has made him such a coveted asset with a surging run from inside his own half that ended with him shooting just wide from Twenty yards and Frimpong also forced a fine stop from Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina with a low drive.

As a downpour soaked the Emirates, Arsenal almost made the breakthrough after 68 minutes when Andrey Arshavin found Van Persie in the area but Reina stuck out a leg to make a vital save.

Wenger rubbed his hands through his rain-soaked hair in sheer frustration, and he was not feeling any better two minutes later when Frimpong marred what had been a performance of real promise with a wild challenge on Lucas that earned him a second yellow card and dismissal.

When the deadlock was broken, it came in cruel fashion for Arsenal with Twelve minutes left. Miquel, with Suarez in close attendance, attempted to clear only to see his attempt strike Ramsey and loop over the stranded Szczesny.

The energy visibly drained out of Arsenal and Suarez's late second only increased the pain for Wenger and Arsenal's increasingly frustrated fans.

She added: "During the match it just felt like it went worse. I already had an ultrasound here on site and I have a partial tear in my left stomach muscle and a little bit of blood."

She said: "I would hate to be Grand Slam-ready right now, seeing as how the US Open is not right now, so I'll try to peak at the right time.

"I want to get better on a few things. I definitely want to try and continue to do more and play harder. I am so happy to be back and every match is so fun for me. I just really enjoy it."

Top seeded player, Caroline Wozniacki has suffered another early defeat on Wednesday, after she has been snatched out by another American teenager Christina Mchale in straight sets with a score line of 6-4, 7-5 in one hour and 57 minutes of play. 

While, other seeded players knocked out in the second round of the tournament are, Ana Ivanovic and Yanina Wickmayer.

2^nd Seed, Vera Zvonareva has attained an easy victory against Russian, Ekaterina Makarova with 6-3 and 6-0 to march into the third round of the Cincinnati Masters.

Giving a bye in round 1 as the 4th seed, had lost his opening match in montreal last week but responed with a 6-4 6-1 victory.

Aside from the Davis Cup, Murray's last victiry came in the quarter finals of Wimbledon and he had played poorly in loosing to Kevin Anderson in Montreal last week, so any sort of win over Nalbandian was to be welcomed by the scot.

 Murray faileed to capitalies on 8 break points before finally converting his 9th to get back level terms , only to drop serve once again, and then recover immediately in a set of wildly fluctuating fortunes.It was Murray who steadied himself the better of the two though, breaking once again on his way to clinching the 1st set seemingly ending Nalbandians resistanse by moving 2-0 clear in the 2nd.

With the finish line now approching, Murray began to really find his range on the return, fring a couple of blistering winners as he broke Nalbandian for a 6th time before serving out the victory. In other matches,7th seed Mardy Fish of the USA thrashed Nikolay Davydenko 6-0 6-2, and France's 6th seed Gael Monfils led Ivan Doding 4-6 6-3 4-0 When the croatian retired.

" I am human-i can definitely assure you of that," The serb added. "I guess it's just all about having a possitive  on the court everyday , waking up everyday wanting to improve, wanting to win,being determined, being professional. 

" It is that desire and motivation that keeps me going. Every match i play, i try to win, Regardless which match is it or whoever is accross the net."

The 24 years old retains  his place at the top of the world rankings,with Fish leapfrogging Gael Monfils to move up to 7th.Jo-Wilfried Tsonqa's semi-final run was enough to move him into the top ten, rising 6 places and edging Nicolas Almagro down into eleventh.
